The Discipline Transfer: What the Gym Taught Me About Building Ventures

Beyond the work.

People assume the gym is where I go to switch off from building ventures. It's the opposite. It's where I'm reminded, three or four times a week, exactly how building anything works.

The first lesson is that nothing visible happens on any given day. You lift, you leave, you look the same in the mirror. The change is invisible at the scale of a single session and undeniable at the scale of a year. Ventures are identical. No single workshop, pitch or hire transforms anything. The compounding is real, but it hides — and most people quit in the gap between effort and evidence.

The second lesson is progressive overload. You grow only by adding a little more weight than was comfortable last week — never so much that you injure yourself, never so little that nothing adapts. That's the entire art of building an organisation, too: the next goal should be heavy enough to force growth and light enough that you don't break the team carrying it.

The third, and the one I value most, is that consistency beats intensity. The dramatic, heroic, once-a-month session does almost nothing. The unremarkable session you do when you don't feel like it does almost everything. Founders romanticise intensity — the all-nighter, the big launch. The work that actually accumulates is the boring, repeated, on-the-days-you-don't-want-to kind.

None of this is motivational. It's mechanical. Discipline isn't a feeling you summon; it's a structure you build so the right thing happens whether or not you feel like it. The gym just makes the lesson impossible to argue with.

So the question I take from the rack to the office is the same:

Are you waiting to feel ready — or have you built the routine that makes feeling ready irrelevant?
