AI Won't Fix a Broken Process — It'll Just Break It Faster

There's a hope quietly baked into most AI projects: that the technology will finally fix the mess. The tangled approval chain, the data nobody trusts, the process that takes eleven steps because of a decision someone made in 2014 and never revisited — surely AI will sort it out.

It won't. Automation is an amplifier, not a cure. Point it at a good process and you get speed. Point it at a broken one and you get the same broken outcome, produced faster, at greater scale, with a machine's confidence attached. You haven't removed the dysfunction. You've industrialised it.

This is the part leaders miss when they treat AI as a shortcut around hard work they'd rather not do. A confused process isn't confused because it lacks computing power. It's confused because nobody has sat down and asked what it's actually for, which steps exist only out of habit, and where the real bottleneck lives. AI can't answer those questions. It will happily automate around them, cementing the mess into something even harder to see and much harder to unpick.

The uncomfortable truth is that AI is most valuable to organisations that have already done the unglamorous work — mapping the process, cutting what doesn't earn its place, agreeing what "good" looks like. For them, AI is rocket fuel. For everyone else, it's rocket fuel poured on a car with no steering.

So the readiness question for any AI initiative isn't "do we have the technology?" It's "do we understand the process well enough to deserve to automate it?" Fix the process first. Then let the machine make it fast.

Before automating anything, the honest question is the one no vendor asks:

Would we be proud of this process if it ran a thousand times faster tomorrow?
